The first is how I'm getting used to casting with far more strength. I'm using a Shimano Calcutta 201B Bait Casting reel with 4 of the centrifugal brakes activated. A 25 lb (0.40 mm) monofilament and a Shimano Antares 7'.00" MH one piece Black Bass rod.

ReplyDeleteI can now cast with a 0.30 monofilament about 35 mts + with a 10 gr soft lure. In other words; Ahora puedo lanzar con monofilamento del 0,30 mm más de 35 mts con un vinilo de 10 gr.

ReplyDeleteThe Calcutta 201B is a great reel, I nearly bought one a few years ago.
Instead I went for the Curado 201E. as it was more suited to my need, but I still see the Calcutta as a nicer reel, the bling effect I am sure...

ReplyDeleteFunny thing is I'm thinking of buying the curado 201 E7 for fresh water fishing.
The calcutta is a superb reel and easy enough to use but slightly bulky so for fresh water I think the Curado is a better choice.

DeleteThe 201 E7 is the one that I have, it is a pretty good reel, very light, so you can cast all day long with it.
But yes I fish in fresh and salt, and it is not made for the salt.
I now also have a Revo Inshore for the salt.
The Curado 201 E7 is good because you can reel in fast if needed.
But it is not made anymore, so you may have to go for the newer one if you go the Curado route.

ReplyDeleteFrom having worked in a fishing shop here in Spain I became friends with the Shimano representative and he can get me the Curado E5 at a very good price. It isn't made anymore but I tend to look after my gear so hopefully I won't run into problems.
The Abu Revo looks like a great real, But I have to check prices becuase it's retailing at 375€ (464 aus dollars) which I think is quite a bit above the price in the US and probably Australia. Spain is terrible when it comes to these reels. There not at all popular, the distributors don't bring them in, and the ones they do are overpriced. I think it' a good reel but I'd have to buy it blind, that is, without ever having seen or had it in my hand. I'd be interested in your views between both The revo and the Curado.

ReplyDeleteI have had the Curado for much longer than the Revo....
I really like the Curado, but I wanted something with more drag, and less prone to corrosion.
First I upgraded the drag on the Curado, with some Carbontex ones and that made a nice difference drag wise, but I was still left with the corrosion problem. This is why I bought the Revo, but I have used only twice since then.
It landed two Barramundi and a blue salmon with no problems, but the biggest fish was only 79cm, so I am yet to see what it would do on a big one.
I like the built of the Revo so far, remind me a bit of an old volvo.
It is bigger than the Curado, and not as fast in retrieve. But it gives me confidence when I use it, it does not come across as a flimsy kind of reel, if that make sense?
But I haven't use it much yet, I will let you know when I will have.

ReplyDeleteThe corrosion factor is very important as my style, well, more the places I have to fish, means the reel gets wet, very wet, so the revo sounds more apt.
